A model generates or reasons over content. Copilot is a product experience around models: it coordinates requests, connects information and tools, and presents results. Orchestration coordinates those steps; grounding supplies relevant source information rather than relying only on a model's general knowledge.

Follow the request through the system.

A request passes through a product interface, orchestration logic, and one or more model interactions. Depending on the experience, the application may retrieve work information, call a tool, or supply conversation history. The response therefore reflects the whole configured system, not just the model's training or its ability to generate fluent text.

Permissions and integrations determine which information can enter that process. A model does not independently acquire access to all organizational data, and a product's existing access checks do not establish whether an organization originally granted too much access.

Distinguish the product experiences.

Microsoft 365 Copilot supports work in productivity applications and organizational context. Copilot Studio supports building agents. GitHub Copilot assists software development, while Security Copilot assists security tasks. Similar branding does not mean identical tools, licensing, model options, or data-processing arrangements.

Copilot Chat can work with web information, supplied content, and supported work-data or agent connections. The available context depends on the specific experience and entitlement. Compare the feature being used rather than assuming a chat interface behaves like every other Copilot offering.

Example: preparing a customer meeting.

A meeting assistant might combine an agenda, permitted customer notes, and recent communications to propose a briefing. Missing access to a key document can produce an incomplete result. Stale notes can produce a misleading result. Neither problem is necessarily solved by selecting a different model.

If the assistant can also update a customer record, a second boundary appears: permission to retrieve context is not automatically permission to make a consequential change. A proposed update should follow the authorization and review rules for that business process.

Evaluate the complete experience.

Examine source relevance, supported citations, task usefulness, and the effort needed to correct the response. Record the product, configuration, and model options involved so results can be compared meaningfully after changes. Product controls, information quality, and human review remain important even when model capabilities improve.
