MITRE ATT&CK is a knowledge base of adversary tactics and techniques grounded in observed behavior. Tactics describe objectives; techniques and sub-techniques describe ways to pursue them. It provides a shared language for threat modeling, detection, and investigation, not a certification, a list of required products, or a guarantee that every attack will be detected.
Map behaviors, not a product checklist.
Sentinel's MITRE coverage view relates active analytics rules and available detection content to ATT&CK techniques. Available content is not deployed protection. An enabled rule also depends on connected data, required fields, query logic, and operating conditions. Review current feature status, permissions, and the framework version supported by the portal before comparing coverage.
Defender XDR uses tactic and technique context in supported detections and investigations to help analysts relate activity across protection workloads. These mappings describe the observed signals; they do not prove that every variation of a technique is covered. Avoid interpreting a colored matrix cell as a measured detection rate.
Connect Microsoft signals with useful threat intelligence.
Microsoft threat analytics brings researcher-authored intelligence about actors, campaigns, techniques, and vulnerabilities into the Defender XDR experience. Where supported, reports connect that context to organizational exposure and related alerts. Available views depend on licensing, permissions, and connected workloads.
Sentinel can ingest threat intelligence and use configured analytics and hunting to correlate it with local events. An indicator such as a domain or file hash is different from intelligence about an adversary's behavior. Keep provenance, confidence, first and last observation, expiry, and handling restrictions with the intelligence. A stale indicator or shared infrastructure can produce a match without proving compromise; analysts need local context.
Example: investigating suspected credential abuse.
A team prioritizes account misuse and uses ATT&CK's Valid Accounts technique (T1078) to organize its investigation questions. Relevant sign-in, identity, device, and application activity may help distinguish legitimate administration from suspicious use. Neither an unusual location nor a single intelligence match establishes the full attack path.
Agree the expected evidence and authorized response with system owners. Use an approved exercise with test identities in a controlled environment to confirm that the required events arrive, a relevant detection runs, and the analyst can follow the incident. Record missing fields, false positives, and failed handoffs rather than declaring success because a rule carries the right technique label.
Validate coverage and maintain the evidence.
Track the behavior, data source, enabled detection, test result, investigation procedure, and response owner together. Distinguish mapped, deployed, tested, and operationally supported coverage. Monitor ingestion health and intelligence freshness; repeat validation when rules, sources, permissions, or ATT&CK versions change. Coordinate any containment with approval and recovery requirements.
Prioritize scenarios relevant to your business instead of maximizing matrix coverage. Microsoft tooling supports the workflow, but your team still needs to demonstrate that evidence reaches a person or approved automation capable of acting on it.
